Budget 2025: Key Points for People with IBD
As we navigate the ongoing challenges of living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it’s crucial to stay informed about the support and resources available. The recent Budget 2025 has introduced several measures aimed at providing financial relief and enhancing healthcare services. Here are the key points relevant to individuals and families affected by IBD.
While these measures represent a small step in the right direction, there is still much work to be done to support people living with IBD in Ireland. We remain committed to advocating for improved resources and support for our community.
Financial Support Initiatives
1. Electricity Credits
Eligible individuals will receive two payments of €125, totalling €250. This initiative is designed to help offset rising energy costs, particularly important for those managing health conditions that require additional heating or cooling.
2. Fuel Allowance
A lump sum of €300 will be provided to assist with heating expenses during the winter months. This support is particularly beneficial for individuals who may have heightened heating needs due to their condition.
3. Living Alone Allowance
For those living alone, an additional payment of €200 will be made. This is aimed at helping individuals cover the increased costs often associated with solo living.
4. Double Payments for Welfare Schemes
Recipients of long-term welfare schemes will receive double payments, offering temporary financial relief during these challenging times.
5. Lump Sum for Selected Welfare Categories
A €400 lump sum will be allocated to those receiving the Carer’s Support Grant and Disability Allowance, providing essential support for caregivers and those with disabilities.
Tax Measures
1. Increased Tax Credits
The Main Tax Credit will increase by €125, along with additional increases across various tax credits.
2. Reduction in USC Rate
The Universal Social Charge (USC) rate will decrease from 4% to 3%.
3. Increased Incapacitated Child Tax Credit
Families caring for children with chronic conditions will benefit from a €300 increase in the Incapacitated Child Tax Credit, addressing the specific financial burdens they face.
Enhancements in Healthcare and Support Services
1. New Healthcare Beds
The introduction of 495 new beds in the health service may improve access to necessary treatments for individuals with IBD.
2. Carer’s Package Enhancements
Increased allowances for carers, including enhancements to the Domiciliary Care Allowance, will provide crucial support for those in caregiving roles.
3. Increase in Social Welfare Rates
Weekly social welfare rates will see a €12 increase.
4. Extended Hot School Meals Programme
This programme will be expanded ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals at school.
Housing and Community Support
1. Affordable Housing Initiatives
The plan to build 10,000 new social homes and increase tenancies aims to provide stable housing for families facing chronic illnesses, reducing housing-related stress.
2. Community Health Services
With additional funding for local health initiatives, there may be improved access to healthcare resources within communities, which is crucial for ongoing management of IBD.
